Hey there, time traveller!

In going door-to-door in Seine River and speaking with families about what matters to them, I am always deeply moved by the extent to which cancer really does affect us all.
Families want to know their health care system understands the toll cancer takes on their lives, be it sleepless nights of worry, the financial burden of cancer, or even how to go about accessing appropriate after-hours cancer-specific care.
I want families in Seine River to know that should you or your loved one receive a diagnosis of cancer, there are new supports and programs available in Manitoba that are not only the envy of the nation, but are allowing patients and their families to access better care, sooner.
Last year, to help alleviate some of the financial stress associated with a cancer diagnosis, we began covering the entire cost of cancer treatment and support drugs taken at home.
This year, we’ve taken yet another step to make life easier for cancer patients. Earlier this spring, we announced that a new Cancer QuickCare Clinic and Cancer HelpLine with evening and weekend service are being established to support Manitobans facing cancer and the illnesses and symptoms that can accompany their treatment.
The new Cancer QuickCare Clinic will be located at CancerCare Manitoba at the Health Sciences Centre and will be open weekdays, evenings and weekends to assist patients with cancer-related illnesses and complications during treatment such as pain, nausea, digestive issues and fatigue. This innovative new cancer treatment clinic is on track to open this fall.
The establishment of this clinic is all part of our larger plan to improve the Cancer Patient Journey, a $40-million initiative to expedite cancer testing and treatment from when cancer is first suspected to the beginning of effective treatment—including all referrals, testing, and diagnosis—to two months or less.
Our government understands that a diagnosis of cancer can be terrifying, which is why we are investing in better, faster, more appropriate cancer treatment and support for patients and their families. After all, there is nothing more important than the health of our loved ones.
