JTCC nets $9.7 million for a new era
Local community centre gets funding for future multi-sport arena
Families in south Winnipeg are destined to have more sports and recreation opportunities in the future, as Jonathan Toews Community Centre is set to get a whole lot bigger.
It was recently announced that the centre — formerly known as Dakota Community Centre and located at 1188 Dakota St. — will receive a combined funding contribution from the province and the city of around $9.7 million for a new field house project.
The new facility will support a variety of sports, including volleyball, all-season baseball, basketball, aerobics, track and indoor soccer, as well as providing fitness space for seniors, officials say. The new design will integrate with the existing building complex and have the capacity to stage multi-court volleyball and basketball tournaments that can seat up to 1,500 spectators.
Officials say the preliminary cost of the new 54,210 sq.-ft. field house is estimated at up to $17.3 million, pending a business plan and blueprints. The province is contributing $5 million and the city is putting in $4.76 million. The remaining portion of the construction costs will come from other partners and stakeholders, including sports organizations and community groups.
In a news release, provincial Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister and MLA for Riel, Christine Melnick, said community centres "create a stronger sense of community pride among residents."
"This exciting new project will be an added asset to our already vibrant community," Melnick said.
Provincial Health Minister and MLA for Seine River, Theresa Oswald, said keeping Manitobans fit and active is an ongoing priority.
"By expanding these facilities, we increase the fitness and activity choices of residents of all ages and help them improve their health and quality of life," Oswald said.
Mayor Sam Katz added the "court sports and fitness programming offered at the field house will be an excellent complement to the ice rinks at the Jonathan Toews Community Centre."
