A local minor hockey team has netted a big win in a national contest.
The Norberry-Glenlee 11A2 Knights is among the winners of the Esso Medals and Certificates of Achievement 2012/13 Esso Medals Score Big Contest, it was recently announced by Imperial Oil.
The St. Vital-based team is one of three teams chosen from more than 15,000 entries in the Canada-wide contest, officials say. Team members were recently presented with a team prize of $1,000. The team also scored a $10,000 grant for the St. Vital Minor Hockey Association (SVMHA).
Each year, minor hockey teams aged six to 18 are invited to register to receive three Esso Medals of Achievement — for most dedicated, most improved and most sportsmanlike — and 18 certificates for the team. Every team that registered for the program qualified for the chance to win the grand prize draw.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for teams and area associations to tap into some extra funding," said Jamie Newton, SVMHA’s president, in a news release.
"The fact that Esso makes funds available is such an asset in helping produce better young Canadian hockey players. The money from Esso will also be put into development programs that could be set up for coaches, players and officials."
