Musical going big at Highbury School

  • Print

The curtain has been raised on Highbury School’s production of Disney’s High School Musical Jr.

The school, located at 99 Highbury Rd., will present a second performance of the show on April 17 following opening night on April 16. Tickets are $5 and available at the door. The show will start at 7 p.m.

"It may be the largest Grade 7 and 8 musical production in the history of St. Vital. Close to 2,000 people are expected to attend," said musical theatre director and Grade 7 and 8 teacher Thor Weidenbacher. "It will exceed our last production of Disney’s Mulan Jr., which drew 1,750 people."

Weidenbacher said the school’s productions "have always been about building community and getting young people involved in the magic of musical theatre and giving back to the community," adding all the staff at the school volunteer their time for the musical, and the company has also performed free concerts this year for clients and residents at St.Amant and Dakota House.

This year’s production of Disney’s High School Musical Jr. stars recording artist and YTV’s Next Star finalist Dane Bjornson as Troy Bolton and MTYP Musical Theatre student Victoria Turko as Gabriella Montez. The show also includes contributions from numerous EAL students from China and South Korea, as well an "inspiring young girl who will be performing in her wheelchair," Weidenbacher said.
