Spring is finally here. Or in our case, summer, since spring kinda sputtered and stalled out.
Awaking from hibernation we again become reacquainted with our yards, our environments and our much-missed neighbours.
The change in seasons brings the annual closet switch around. The winter coats and boots are packed away. Outgrown clothes are donated or passed down to the next child, providing the jackets and ski pants are not gender specific. Then comes the yearly issue of pulling out the shorts and tank tops.
‘Will these fit?’ you ask yourself optimistically. You try on a pair and wonder, ‘What happened here? Did the Clothes Fairy shrink my clothes while they sat in the box over winter?’
Then you pull out the scale and confirm what you were afraid of. The dreaded winter weight gain. Experts say this is typically 10 pounds.
It happens to the best of us. When you layer on clothes in the winter not only do you hide your body from the rest of the world, you hide the truth from yourself.
I’m all for staying fit over the off months, but when did those 10 pounds sneak up on me? More importantly, I don’t have to ask where the pounds went because the tight shorts scream out that answer.
Coincidentally, I just got a friendly email from an Island Lake neighbour, advising of a new boot camp that just started in the area.
After reading the name Dean Lytle, I realized this was another neighbour, a couple of streets over from me. People take a lot for granted nowadays, and the wealth of collective expertise in Island Lakes always amazes me. Dean, for example, is a former peg Blue Bomber and is still heavily involved in the game, coaching youth football.
Currently he has a new sports club and has successfully run a boot camp for the last three years in another area of the city.
I asked him what made him interested in taking on the challenge to motivate and tone his neighbours.
Dean said it was simple, that he had heard the same message from others about the damage winter caused.
He loves to see the transformation and helping others believe in themselves.
"I enjoy motivating other people and assisting them in establishing their goals. Everyone has potential, and sometimes they just need that extra push and encouragement to get there," he says.
It you’re interested, the boot camps take place Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6 a.m. to 6:45 a.m.
