A new city park was officially opened in the St. Vital area recently.
Canoe Club Park is located at 50 Dunkirk Dr. near the Canoe Club retirement condominiums and the Winnipeg Canoe Club Golf Course.
"The Canoe Club used to be an active recreation complex, featuring a swimming pool and tennis courts, but the club was eventually closed and the land was sold to erect the condo building," said Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital).
"When that was done, a park was created alongside the Red River behind the new building."
Speaking after a recent park dedication event, which included a tea organized by seniors in the building, Mayes said the park lies "directly behind this building and has a great view of a curve in the Red River."
"The Canoe Club has been a presence at this bend in the Red River for decades. The uses have changed over time, but I am delighted this spot will remain accessible to the public to enjoy a walk on the trail or sitting on a bench to contemplate the river," Mayes said.
"Designating land for the park began under my predecessor, Gord Steeves, with the actual sodding and other work starting in 2012, after I was elected. I am very proud of getting this project done and the park opened," he added.
