While we are all busy finishing our holiday shopping, the City of Winnipeg has given St. Vital residents an early gift by announcing a $3-million upgrade to the St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool.
Splashing around in a pool may not seem like a high priority as we all watch the snow fall, but nothing beats a refreshing dip in a pool on a hot summer day.
For 46 years, St. Vital families have gathered at the St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool for some fun in the sun. The city is now looking to improve this experience with welcome upgrades, including multiple spray features and a new pool building. The new pool will be heated, greatly increasing comfort and allowing the pool to both open earlier in the season and stay open longer. A new gradual beach entry will improve accessibility and allow more families to enjoy the wonderful space.
Renovations will extend beyond the pool and include improvements to nearby pathways, landscaping and a new play structure and swings. Once all the construction is complete, the St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool will become a hub for outdoor summer fun.
City Councillor Brian Mayes (St. Vital) and I have a great working relationship, and have collaborated on many projects that benefit our community. I was very pleased when he invited me to the announcement of these upgrades.
I can remember spending many afternoons at the pool with my own kids, and know how important this project will be to St. Vital families. These community spaces give our kids a safe place to hang out and be active. In the past, the pool’s hours have been extended during heat waves to give the community much-needed relief from the extreme weather. The pool even offers free swims on some evenings so that anyone can join in on the fun.
Construction on the pool will begin this spring, and it is expected to be completed in the fall. Once finished, the new St. Vital Centennial Outdoor Pool will be a wonderful addition to our community.
Warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful holiday and a very happy new year. If you have questions about this new project, please feel free to contact my office by phone at 204-237-8771, by email at Nancy.Allan@yourmanitoba.ca or visit in person at 51D St. Anne’s Rd.
