Province increasing spending on pagodas, playgrounds

The community of Riel is full of wonderful places and people who work to make this a special place in which to live.

To help build great neighbourhoods like Riel, our government, many years ago, created the Community Places Program to support the community facilities that bring us together.

In Riel this year, I am pleased to celebrate the work of the Henteleff Park Foundation. The Manitoba Government has committed a $25,000 grant to support fundraising efforts towards building an interpretive centre to proudly display and tell the history of this lovely area that was originally a homestead. I know from personal experience that this little treasure of a park is enjoyed by families year-round.

I am also pleased to honour the work that Odd Fellows & Rebekahs Personal Care Homes do in taking care of our seniors.

The Government of Manitoba has committed $12,000 to replace the well-loved, and unfortunately well-worn, pagoda in the back garden of Golden Links Personal Care Home.

Past recipients of Community Places Program support include, but are not limited to, the Hastings-Marie-Anne-Gaboury Parent Playground Committee, Village Canadien on River Road and others throughout the Riel constituency.

The Community Places Program provides funding and planning assistance to non-profit organizations to build, upgrade, expand, or acquire community facilities. This year, the program will invest $2.9 million into 241 community projects and help leverage over $17 million in funding from other sources. Since its creation, Community Places has provided more than $108 million in grants to support more than 7,000 community construction projects province-wide.

Also available to support these types of facilities is the newly-announced Winnipeg Community Infrastructure Program, a $7.5 million three-year program made possible by the Manitoba Building and Renewal Plan.

Funding support will be available to libraries, swimming pools and splash pads, parks, trails, community centres, arenas, gymnasiums as well as other community infrastructure facilities.

For more information on how to access these grants, call the Riel constituency office at 204-253-5162 or email me at Christine.Melnick@yourmanitoba.ca  — looking forward to hearing from you!
