Show a little puppy love for a good paws

One Winnipeg dog rescue is hoping community members will show a little puppy love for a good cause.

Holiday Fun Dog Day will be held on Sun., Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vada’s Club K9, located at B-628 St. Anne’s Rd. in support of Boston Terrier & Pug Rescue of Southern Manitoba.

The event will help offset the cost of vets bills and upcoming surgeries, said Rena Mathieson, one of BTPRSM’s three executive directors, noting the organization works closely with Southglen Veterinary Hospital (V-730 St. Anne’s Rd).

The rescue takes in dogs from puppy mills and "owner surrenders" and their ailments can range from collapsed tracheas to juvenile diabetes, Mathieson said.

And despite the organization’s title, it has occasionally taken others breeds, the Mynarski resident added.

The fundraiser will include services to pamper your pooch, including de-shedding ($15), "pawdicures" ($10) and award-winning photographer Carmen Matthews (Photography by Carmen) will be taking pet pictures with Santa for a $10 sitting fee.

There will also be a bake sale — mostly for humans, although there will be a few dog treats available — and a silent auction.

The volunteer-run rescue has no headquarters, so it relies on a network of foster homes throughout the city.

"We supply things like food, kennels, leashes and collars. All the foster parent needs is to love them. We’ll sometimes even drive them to the vets or adoption events, as not everyone has their own transport," Mathieson said, noting organizers are "very picky" when choosing foster homes.

"Bostons, in particular, have high energy levels and like to run around, but are not outdoor dogs, per se, so we have to be extensive in our search.

BTPRSM’s other two executive directors are Tyndall Park resident Jessica Klym and Shaila Wise, who lives in Charleswood.

On the day, the de-shedding and claw trimming will be walk-in appointments, although visitors are advised to call in advance to reserve a photo spot by calling Vada’s at 204-221-0998.
