Summertime in St. Boniface
If you’re looking for family fun this summer, there’s no need to go very far! There are plenty of things to do throughout St. Boniface for children and adults of all ages. Here are my top 10 favourite recreational activities:
1. Leisure Guide summer programs and camps
There are numerous programs offered for the entire family, including swimming lessons, sports and preschool day camps available in both English and French.
2. Free summer programs for children and youth
From July 2 to August 9, Monday to Friday 10:30 am to 4:30 p.m., Archwood Community Centre offers free drop-in play for children six to 12 years. Activities include arts, crafts, games and sports.
From July 2 to August 9, Monday to Thursday 1 to 9 p.m. and Friday 2 to 6 p.m., Winakwa Community Centre offers a variety of free activities for youth 13 to 18 years of age.
3. Swimming pools, free swim
Open June 28 to August 30, weather permitting, several outdoor pools located throughout St. Boniface, including Happyland Pool, Norwood Pool, Provencher Pool and Windsor Park Pool.
Free swims are offered at:
Bonivital - Thursday 4 to 5 p.m.
Happyland - Wednesday 4 to 6 p.m.
Norwood - Tuesday 5 to 7 p.m.
Provencher - Monday 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Windsor Park - Thursday 4 to 6 p.m.
4. Spray pad
Spray pads charge no admission and offer a great way to cool off. The Provencher Park spray pad is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
5. Wading pools
Wadings pools are also free and will be open for most of the summer, weather permitting and are located at Berkshire Park, Champlain Community Centre, General Vanier Park, Happyland Park, JH Bruns Park, Norwood Community Centre, Vermillion Park and Winakwa Community Centre. Hours vary.
6. Disc Golf
Disc Golf is a unique sport that combines flying a disk and golf and is available at Happyland Park.
7. Skateboard Park
Happyland Park also offers a free skateboard park for boarders of all ages and skill levels.
8. Tennis courts
Numerous tennis courts are available for use in St. Boniface at Island Lakes School, Norwood Community Centre, Notre Dame Community Centre, Shamrock Park / School, St. Boniface Arts and Technology Centre, and Windsor Park School.
9. Winnipeg Public Library
For those rainy or cooler days, the St. Boniface and Windsor Park libraries also offer a variety of programing for the entire family.
10. Trails and paths
Walk, run or cycle on St. Boniface’s trails:
La Liberté Trail, North St. Boniface
Seine River Trail, Provencher Boulevard South to Bertrand Street
Kavanagh Park, North of Kavanagh Street at Seine River
Lyndale Drive, Norwood Bridge to St. Mary’s Road
