Teen Stop program: 30 years of helping youth
This year’s graduates should feel incredibly proud. Now, more than ever, success depends on education.
Whether completing elementary school, an apprenticeship program or adult education, graduating students are taking control of their future.
In 2012, Manitoba’s graduation rate rose to 84%, an 18% increase over 2002. But there’s still more work to do.
Young people’s challenge is to learn, study and grow. Our challenge is to support them in every way we can. That’s why our government has funded education at or above the rate of economic growth for 14 years in a row.
We recognize that students also benefit from hands-on learning opportunities, so our government is providing $200,000 to upgrade shops classrooms across the province. We are also increasing the number of skills training opportunities and apprenticeships seats in Manitoba.
There are amazing community partner programs right here in St. Vital that also reach students who may not fit into the traditional classroom.
Since 1980 Teen Stop Jeunesse has been offering programming for youth, including music, homework assistance and cooking classes. The St. Vital Adult Education Centre started as a pilot project 12 years ago and is now a vital part of our community.
This year there were 39 successful Adult Education graduates and three graduates of the GED program. Congratulations to all of these brave and determined people, and to staff and volunteers at Teen Stop Jeunesse who make these achievements possible.
Congratulations as well to all graduates for your tremendous accomplishment! I wish you all the best as you decide what project you’ll tackle next.
