Are you up for it?
That’s the call-to-action slogan — which has been imparted on posters around the city and in bicycle shops, as well as rural areas — issued by Habitat for Humanity Manitoba to potential participants of its 2013 Cycle of Hope, as part of its 1,000 Miles Home Challenge.
The 20th annual event will take place from June 29 to July 13, when an entourage of cyclists will head from Louisville, Ky., to Winnipeg to raise funds to help build a home for a family in need.
To allow cyclists to properly prepare for the event, organizers are encouraging individuals to attend an upcoming Registration Blitz event on Sat., Jan. 19 at Habitat’s headquarters at 60 Archibald St. (above the ReStore.) or register soon.
On the day, the registration desk will be open from 9 a.m. and there will be a meet-and-greet at 10 a.m.
Organizers say there will be a giveaway for individuals registered on or before Jan. 19 and the registration fee is $475, which must be paid in full and submitted along with a registration form, consent and release form, personal information sheet and passport photocopy. Cash, cheques or credit cards are accepted. Each must raise at least $2,500.
Last October, event participant and south St. Vital resident Olenka Antymniuk — who co-organized the first Cycle of Hope with Lorraine Petkau in 1994 — told The Lance that riders ideally need months of preparation time for the massive ride to factor in things such as booking vacation time, finding a suitable bicycle and working on fitness levels.
Habitat will also be hosting future meet-and-greet events in the run-up to the ride on Feb. 23, March 16, April 20, May 11, June 19, as well as an Aug. 23 windup. To confirm locations and times for these meetings, call Elaine Smith at (204) 235-2181 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
Refunds for registered participants will be possible — in exceptional circumstances — until March 16. For more information, visit www.habitat.mb.ca.
