We Day in Winnipeg was inspiring
School: Sisler High School
Written by: Nathanael Meshesha, Grade 12 student
Going to We Day showed that all it really takes is one person to make a change, and that once the word spreads it can become so much more.
Meeting Hannah Taylor, a girl I had heard of often as a child, as well as the numerous other inspiring figures made me rethink what "possible" was.
Hearing her story, and seeing all the people there willing to support the movement motivated me even more to spread the word and support the cause.
After We Day, our school did numerous fundraisers, such as: raising food and money for Winnipeg Harvest; donating over nine bags of pennies were to our local Royal Bank as part of the We Create Change campaign; selling tickets to a benefit concert for a Haitian school: and selling pizza and snacks to raise funds.
In fact, our former Sisler High school teacher, Mr. Bolivar, from Haiti, contacted Ms. Petryshyn, and our group is currently promoting a benefit concert to help a school in Haiti.
Experiencing We Day in Winnipeg was eye-opening. In the future I would like to see other We Day events in other communities such as Toronto, Ont., experiencing the same feeling that we did here, and maybe even bring a piece of Winnipeg there.
Even though we can’t go directly to the countries in need to help them, our school, Sisler High School, is a big contributor to efforts overseas, and even after I graduate, I hope I can still play a part.
Youth and teachers who participated in Free the Children’s We Day Manitoba are writing regularly about how they are taking action and supporting local and global causes through the organization’s We Schools in Action year-long program. For more information, visit www.weday.com
