Area business undergoes tasteful transformation

  • Print

It used to be a place to get your television fixed, but now a St.Vital shop is selling some of Manitoba’s best locally-grown food.

Ken and Wendy Loney moved to St. Vital in 1983. Ken worked in TV repair. Eventually, he bought the business he was working for and started K&W TV Service and moved the business into a strip mall on St. Mary’s Road where Wendy ran the office and Ken did repairs. Ninteen years later, they’re still in the same location, but are now operating Local Meats & Frozen Treats.

The Loneys decided to go into the food business when the TV repair biz started to fail about six years ago. With electronics being made in other countries, business had slowed to a trickle.

They were inspired by Mom’s Pantry Products, a food fundraising organization, to go into the food business. Eventually Ken and Wendy transformed the store into a Mom’s Pantry outlet.
After what they call "a steep learning curve," they stepped out on their own with their own local food shop. Ninety per cent of the frozen treats are made and processed in Manitoba. They have everything from perogies and sausages to the couple’s personal favourite, bison ribeye steaks.

When you walk into the store, it’s surprising how many different kinds of foods are produced right here in Manitoba. Some offerings include locally-produced meats such as beef, bison, elk, pork, pickerel, and chicken. Other homegrown treats include honey, perogies, pizza, tourtiere, BBQ sauce, noodles, and salsa.

The Loneys also put great effort into labelling products so consumers know where their food is coming from.

Supporting local farmers and producers is important to the Loneys and the reason why they’re so passionate about local fare. Their TV repair business failed because of large corporations and foreign manufacturers. Ken knows the name of every one of his suppliers, including who sells him free range chicken and who raises the pigs that their nitrate-free bacon comes from.

Local Meats & Frozen treats is located at 8-1604 St. Mary’s Rd.
