Some Winnipeg Blue Bombers are becoming bachelors up for bid to help animals in need.
Cvet’s Pets is hosting a Bomber bachelor auction on Wed., August 28. The Cvet’s Pets for Bachelorettes event will be held at Area Nightclub at 1792 Pembina Hwy. near the St. Vital area.
Dates with Bombers will be auctioned off and winning bidders will win a dinner with a player. Dinner is included in the prize. Some players up for auction include Brandon Stewart, Jovon Johnson, Carl Volny, Michel-Pierre Pontbriand, and Chris Matthews.
Cvet’s Pets is a program started by Blue Bomber Chris Cvetkovic. Cvet’s Pets is a 100% volunteer-run, not-for-profit organization that helps local Winnipeg no-kill animal rescue programs.
Cvetkovic said it isn’t just him running the program. He has a lot of help from volunteers and his teammates.
"This particular event was actually a recommendation of my board," he said. "My board consists of all people of the same passion as me if not greater. Everyone has equal say and we basically run any event we can come up with."
Cvetkovic said he could not run these types of events without the support of his teammates.
"Most of the guys on the team have participated in a Cvet’s Pets event on more than one occasion and they all understand the privilege that we as athletes possess, in that we can basically exploit what we do for a living to bring public and media attention to whatever cause we do," he said.
"I am very grateful and humbled by the support my teammates offer me."
Cvetkovic started the program because of his love of animals.
"I work with lots of charities but none geared for animals so I started my own," Cvetkovic said.
Originally, the program helped raise money for animal rescues. Now it is working with MSAR to help take dogs out of shelters. MSAR trains dogs for behavourial interference for military veterans with post traumatic stress disorder. MSAR trains dogs for seizure detection, search and rescue, and medical services.
"It’s an amazing organization," said Cvetkovic.
Tickets for the auction are $20 and include entry and food. Tickets are available at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers store.
