October is definitely one of my favourite months.

There is just so much to love about this time of year. The air is crisp and invigorating; not too cold and not too hot but just right for engaging in some end-of-season outdoor activities before the snow visits us once again.

Even more fortunate for us, the first few weeks of October so far have also been warm and sunny: ideal conditions for visiting the park, going for a bike ride, or doing yard work. I especially love walking around my neighbourhood this time of year as the trees in Windsor Park are absolutely gorgeous, with their bright red, yellow and orange leaves.

Another thing I love about this time of year is Thanksgiving. Next to Christmas, Thanksgiving is the one holiday on which my family and extended family are most likely to get together for good food, great company, lots of laughs and, of course, pumpkin pie.

This time of year also gets me thinking about all that I have to be thankful for.

My daughter and I were out recently enjoying an unseasonably warm afternoon at Vincent Massey Park when I decided to find out what others are grateful for.

Jaxon, age four, and his cousin Esmée, age two, were at the playground with their grandmother and are currently visiting family in Windsor Park. They were too busy having fun and enjoying the good weather to stop and talk about what they are thankful for, but I’m sure sunny days and playgrounds would be on that list.

Alec, age six, told me that he was "thankful for his sister, Mom and Dad."

His sister Avril, age three, proudly told me that she was thankful for "princesses". Later that same day I met Tanya out walking, who told me, "I’m thankful for my kids and my great job."

No matter what you have to be grateful for, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

One of the many things I am thankful for is that I recently had the opportunity to become involved with a great program. The Emergency Department Violence Intervention Program (EDVIP) aims to help at-risk youth in Winnipeg avoid violence.

This program is currently seeking to raise money through the Aviva Community Fund for a mental health counsellor. Show your support for this worthy cause by voting online at www.tinyurl.com/aviva-edvip

You can vote once per day, and every vote makes a difference so please get online and show your support.
