Fall promises to be a busy time for area families

  • Print

You wouldn’t know it by some of the unseasonably warm weather we’ve been experiencing in the past few weeks, but fall is most definitely in the air.

Just take a leisurely walk through Windsor Park and you’ll see all the signs of seasonal change: colourful leaves on the trees, folks doing their end-of-summer yard work, and children and teens returning to class.

For many of us, September marks not only the end of the long, lazy days of summer, but also a return to our hectic schedules. Luckily for those of us who love to stay busy, there are plenty of activities, classes, and programs for both young and old in Windsor Park.

Winakwa Community Centre (980 Winakwa Rd.) is once again hosting a youth drop-in program this fall for children ages 13 to 17, beginning Oct. 2. Drop in times will be Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information contact Dean Moran, facility manager at 204-253-4418.

The centre is also home this year to an exciting new program for children ages eight to 16 who are interested in learning the art of clowning around. Jocko’s Junior Joeys clown class will meet at the community centre the third Monday of every month from 7 to 8.30 p.m. Classes start Sept. 17, but interested clown wannabees are more than welcome to come down and join the fun at the next class on Mon., Oct. 15. The cost is only $60 per child and includes a complete clown make-up kit. Classes will run until next June. For more information contact Val Meiners at 204-253-7833 or email pufftheclown@gmail.com.

Activities and programs for pre-schoolers and their caregivers are once again being offered at the Family Centre. Windsor Park families are encouraged to participate in these wonderful programs at either Frontenac School (866 Autumnwood Dr.) or Archwood School (800 Archibald St.). Topics and activities include positive parenting, nutrition, health, and literacy. The best part? The programs are free.

And for those of us who love to learn a new hobby or skill, there are plenty of classes for adults to choose from in the Winnipeg Leisure Guide: www.winnipeg.ca/cms/recreation

/leisureguide.stm and the Louis Riel School Division Continuing Education: www.lrsd.net  Some classes fill quickly, so be sure to register soon.
