Hockey school offer unique perspective

  • Print

Colin Popham and Matt Jones, born and raised in St. Vital, have taken their passion for hockey and experience working at camps to start their own training program called WinnPro Hockey.

Although the hockey season just ended, they’re already planning on how they can help players between the ages of nine and 14 develop their game. Their Beyond Practice summer camp is already filling up and will take place Aug. 13 to 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Southdale Community Centre.

WinnPro Hockey is not your standard camp. In addition to on and off-ice guidance, players will receive video analysis of their skills and skating. Players are recorded by a camera on the ice, and afterward will receive one-on-one analysis from Popham and Jones.

"No one else in the city is providing this kind of service," Jones said.

Their combined 17 years of power skating and skill development instruction and educations led the duo to use video to help players.

Jones has a post-secondary education in kinesiology and Popham in physics.

Popham and Jones said that their summer camp is a technical power skating and skills camps for players looking to develop greater efficiency and power in their game.

"It will provide players with the perfect blend of technical instruction and practical application," they said.

For $385 players will receive two and a half hours of on-ice training,90 minutes of off-ice development, and 90 minutes of classroom instruction each day. For more information visit www.winnprohockey.com or call 221-6198.
