Making contact is a real artform
John Hindle, former general manager of the Winnipeg Goldeyes and St. Vital resident, joined me in the CJOB studio recently to celebrate and share his newest book, Making Contact — The Art of Connecting with People.
John is no stranger to the written word. His first book, Jackrabbits in the Outfield,chronicled the start up of the Goldeyes baseball team. His second book, A Good Life, is a heartfelt book full of stories of his father’s life that his dad shared with John when he was in his 80s, only months before he died.
Now in Making Contact, John shares the strategies for connecting with people that he used to build both the Goldeyes and Home Run Sports (another St. Vital icon) and managing a myriad of different people.
With chapter titles like Fleas in a Jar and Why Can’t Everyone Think Like Me?, you know it’s going to be a fun and interesting book.
My favorite chapter is called Love in a Jar. It tells of when John was leaving the Goldeyes and he received this very special gift from his staff. It was a jar full of notes from everyone who had worked with him over the years. The notes told of special memories and moments that mattered to them. Beautiful. Forget a gold watch, give me love in a jar anytime.
I used this super idea recently for my mom’s 85th birthday. I decorated a pretty jar and asked our family to write down something meaningful to them and place it in the jar to present to her. She was so delighted, she said she stayed up all night reading and re-reading the notes.
This year I plan to ask her friends and neighbours to add to the jar. I think it will be a joy-fulled surprise for her.
