One St. Vital resident is out to beat the winter blues at the 2013 Manitoba Orchid Society Show and Sale, which runs March 22-24.
"It’s a really nice break from the winter and you can see some very beautiful flowers," Fraser Cameron said.
Cameron, treasurer of the Orchid Society, is helping organize the event.
And he’s bring some of his very own orchids to the show. If they’re of high-enough quality, the flowers will be evaluated at the show along with many others by judges who travel around the world to judge orchids. Professionals from the American Orchid Society will be giving out awards for the most outstanding plants.
Cameron owns about 30 of his own orchids. He’s had blooms on some of his orchids for up to a year.
The Orchid Show and Sale will be held at the Assiniboine Park Conservatory from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Along with the opportunity to view some of the most beautiful flowers in the city, people will also have the opportunity to learn about selecting and growing orchids at classes that will run during the weekend. There will also be orchids for sale.
Admission is $7 and it’s free for people under 14 years old. Proceeds go towards running the show and educational seminars held by the Manitoba Orchid Society throughout the year.
