All aboard! Train lovers and enthusiasts meet up
Public invited to watch displays at track
Get steamed with former machinists and train enthusiasts at the Manitoba Live Steamers (MLS) Annual Steam Up.
From Aug. 24 (10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) to Aug. 25 (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), the MLS is holding its 74th annual open house at the MLS track on the corner of Inkster Boulevard and Sturgeon Road. At the track, MLS members display and run their model trains.
The MLS was founded in 1939 based on a mutual interest in small model engineering.
According to the MLS website, the club "brings together people in Manitoba who enjoy building and operating working models of engines, both stationary and locomotives, with a focus on steam power."
"The guys have spent time in the winter making small models of various steam engines," MLS president Phil Shaw said.
Shaw is a self-proclaimed train enthusiast, although he can’t explain the reason for his love for trains except that he has always been interested in them. But he believes nostalgia is part of the reason.
"I think a lot of the guys like the steam, like the older technology," Shaw said. "They’re all scale models of something that ran in the late 1800s to early 1900s."
Admission is free on both days. For more information about the MLS or the engineering show, go online at http://www.manitobalivesteamers.com
