Annual Fab Fem fundraiser on the horizon
Staff at the Fort Garry Women’s Resource Centre are busy preparing for their annual fundraiser.
The fourth annual Fab Fem fundraiser will take place Wed., Feb. 20 at the West End Cultural Centre.
The event celebrates the artistic contributions of women to the community.
Colleen Stratman, the centre’s public education co-ordinator, said this year’s event will be extra special as it’s also the centre’s 30th anniversary celebration.
Stratman said the annual event is especially important as it’s the centre’s only "big" fundraiser.
"It’s our one major fundraiser that we do each year. A lot of work goes into it, and it raises funds to be able to continue offering free support services to women and children," Stratman said.
"It’s very important."
This year’s list of performers includes local music icon Romi Mayes and rising star Emma Cloney.
Mayes is a Juno-nominated rock musician who has shared the stage with the likes of Derek Trucks, Levon Helm, Corb Lund and Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.
Stratman said event organizers aim to attract top-notch Winnipeg musicians each year.
"We typically have always chosen people who’ve been local. We like to have someone who is a little bit more well-known, and (someone who is) a little bit more up and coming," she said.
Stratman said ticket prices have been set at $20 each to encourage everyone to attend the fundraiser.
"We try to (make it) so everyone would be able (to afford) to come," she said. "The $20 makes it so more people will be able to."
Stratman stressed that even though the fundraiser is in support of a women’s centre, it’s not a women’s-only event.
"It’s not. Everyone is welcome," Stratman assured.
