Arbor Day 2013 a chance to swing high
If you’ve never been swinging 50-feet high in the treetops, Arbor Day 2013 is your chance to rectify that.
"You can get in a saddle . . . and they’ll hoist you up in a tree and you’ll get to climb around the top of the tree," said Matt Vinet, the Manitoba director of the International Society of Arboriculture.
A professional will be up there as well, Vinet assures, including tree-climbing champion Jesse Antonation.
Other thrills will include a bucket truck, which will hoist people up 70 feet, and a children’s zip line.
The event, presented by Trees Winnipeg and billed as All Trees Tell a Story, is a chance to "learn about one of the greatest things about our city — the fantastic trees," Vinet said, and in that vein there will be professional arborists on hand to answer all questions tree-related.
"They’re very knowledgeable people you’d normally have to pay money to get answers from," Vinet said.
Throughout the day there will be sessions on tree pruning and planting, woodturning demos, children’s craft-making and story-telling, and guided riparian forest tours.
Events are centered at the Nature Playground located just west of the Assiniboine Park Pavilion and south of the Duck Pond.
The event will take place May 25 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Assiniboine Park.
