Artist displaying and selling oil paintings
From Korea to Calgary to Winnipeg, Ki Kim kept painting
From kindergarten to retirement, painting has been a big part of Ki Kim’s life, and he wants to share his work at his art exhibition from Sept. 14 to 21.
Taking place at Storage Solutions (300 Caron Rd.), this Charleswood man is planning on showing and selling 40 of his original oil paintings at $200 each from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day of the sale.
Ever since he was a young boy, Kim has loved to paint. He paints in all sorts of styles, including floral, landscape, portrait, and abstract.
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Kim attended an art college in his home country before coming to Canada 35 years ago. He lived in Calgary for 10 years before arriving in Winnipeg.
For Kim, painting was a hobby, not a full-time job. But he incorporated art into his day job, making his living working at a design company.
"The rest of the weekends and evenings, I keep on painting," Kim said.
Now Kim is retired and spends a lot of his free time working on his art.
Living in a one-bedroom apartment, Kim had no room to paint, so he searched for studios in the city but found them to be too expensive. Then Kim had his first art exhibit two years ago at Storage Solutions, whose owner allowed Kim to use the space as his personal studio for a cheap price.
"Painting gives me pleasure and satisfaction," Kim said. "(It) helps emotionally."
When Kim grew up in South Korea, it was not a peaceful time, which is why he came to Canada. He also wanted to give his wife and two sons, now 36 and 28, a chance at a better life.
Like their father, Kim’s sons pursued careers in the artistic field. Both sons are computer graphic designers in Toronto.
"The pay is really good too," Kim laughed.
But Kim is more about the art than he is about the money.
"As long as I can paint and sell, I’m happy," Kim said.
