Avros propelling the puck in pink

A West Winnipeg-based hockey team will be shooting and scoring for a good cause.
The Winnipeg Avros Midget AAA team is playing a fundraiser game on Nov. 16 at the Selkirk Recreation Complex in support of CancerCare Manitoba.

The game starts at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.

The Avros team plays in the Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League. They play home games at the MTS IcePlex (3969 Portage Ave.) and at Keith Bodley Indoor Arena (165 Sansome Ave.). There are two female teams in the league: the Avros and the Winnipeg Ice Midget AAA team.

"(Avros) players have pledge forms where they can collect pledges," Avros head coach Ashley van Aggelen said. "Every family is in charge of selling 10 tickets, and the kids are asked to raise a minimum of $50."

The team is competing to see who can sell the most tickets and collect the most pledges. The winning player will receive Jets tickets.

Avros goalie Justine McIntosh has already sold her minimum of 10 tickets for the CancerCare fundraiser game, which holds a great deal of significance for her.

"I’m trying to collect as much money as I can because my best friend had cancer, so this is an awesome game for me, just to think that this money is going toward her, basically," McIntosh, 17, said.

McIntosh’s best friend, Brett Kletke, beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma a year and a half ago, and is now playing soccer.

"It was hard at the time. It’s awesome to think she made it through," McIntosh said.

Hockey Winnipeg provided the Avros team with money for pink CancerCare hockey jerseys. They also printed 1,200 tickets and provided door prizes for the upcoming game.

"They went full out," laughed McIntosh. "I’m really excited."

McIntosh has been playing hockey since she was six years old. She’s wanted to be a goalie for as long as she can remember.

"My brother was a goalie when he was younger. He still is a goalie. I just wanted to be like him," McIntosh said.

"It was such a different position, so I tried it out. I like that it’s all up to me, if that makes sense," McIntosh added.

McIntosh is a third-year goalie for the Avros team.

"She’s been on the team since 2011, when Avros started," said van Aggelen, who lives in St. James.

McIntosh is also an alternate goalie for Team Manitoba’s third-string hockey team.
