Battery program still going strong
It has been one cold, cold December and January hasn’t it?
The battery recycling program continues to perform better than expected. Since the start of the program, a half a ton of batteries, from a total of 200-plus households, has been collected and recycled. Since the beginning of January alone, I personally have made over 30 box pickups, collecting over 150 pounds of batteries which would have otherwise ended up being dumped in our landfills, leaching chemicals into our earth, forgotten by all. This program would not have been the success it has become without the participation of the residents of St. Charles Ward. I encourage you all to keep collecting and calling my office to arrange for your box to be picked up.
For those of you not aware, John Taylor Collegiate is celebrating its 50th anniversary this May. A series of socials, pancake breakfasts, sports and family activities is sure to be enjoyed by all. I encourage you all to get out and make John Taylor Collegiate’s anniversary a memorable one. More information on anniversary activities is available at http://www.jt50.ca/
On a personal note, I would like to congratulate St. Charles’ own Jaring Timmerman for setting two world records in swimming on January 24. Jaring, who turned 105 in 2013, was previously the fastest backstroke and freestyle swimmer alive in the 100 to 104 age group. His energy, determination and willpower has forced Guinness to set up a new 105 to 109-year-old category just for Jaring. Jaring is an inspiration to us all, both young and old alike. He is a man who continues to meet new challenges while living his life to the full.
