Brooklands Weston Legion gets funding for upgrades
Fielding says he’s happy to support at-risk community
A local legion recently came into some money.
The Brooklands & Weston Legion Branch No. 2 (1613 Logan Ave.) has been approved for a grant of $32,290 from the St. James-Brooklands Ward.
The legion applied for the community incentive grant on Oct. 15.
"They put an application in, then a person from our administration reviews it," Coun. Scott Fielding (St. James-Brooklands-Weston) said. "The administration recommended we approve it because it fit all the criteria outlined."
The project is expected to cost $65,840, and the legion provided the difference.
In a letter, branch president Robert Gault wrote that he is requesting money from the City for the two washrooms upstairs as well as the cupboards in the upper lounge.
"Our washrooms are deteriorating, along with our cupboards," the letter states.
Gault said he would install energy-efficient toilets and urinals with some of the money.
Fielding said he is supportive of businesses in the Brooklands and Weston areas, and he tries to make meaningful investments that would improve those neighbourhoods.
"Specifically Weston, which is an at-risk area," Fielding added. "The legion is a meeting place. It’s not just a legion — people have meetings there in the building itself. Any time I can support a legion or community club, and people are coming to us that have funding to make it happen, then we’re going to make those investments."
Gault said the branch was in bad financial shape seven years ago.
"I had put a lot of time into the branch to get them back on their feet again," Gault said.
"We had no money, but now we’re doing good. We’re back on board and we’re starting to see profits every year and that’s why the City is helping it out."
The project is expected to begin June of 2014 and be completed by January of 2015.
