C-Shells looking to make waves in boat race
A group of people are keeping the memory of their friend alive by participating in a dragon boat race.
Cherl Shell died of breast cancer in March this year. She is survived by her husband, son, and daughter who are a few members of The C-Shells.
The C-Shells are one of several dragon boat teams racing in FMG’s (Facility Marketing Group) 2013 Manitoba Dragon Boat Festival on Sept. 13, 14, and 15 at The Forks. Each team is automatically racing two times.
The C-Shells are comprised of people who may not exactly know each other, but they all knew Shell.
"We were so incredibly blessed to have known her," C-Shell member Lianne Tregobov said.
Tregobov was Shell’s friend and former business partner. They owned a store in the River Heights area called Simply Adorable. While they were in business together, Shell was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought it for 18 years.
After Shell passed away in March, Tregobov thought she needed to do something to honour Shell’s memory, thus creating The C-Shells.
The team’s name came from both Shell’s name as well as her love of water.
"She loved Hawaii," Lorraine Danyluk, a high school friend of Shell’s, said. "When we came up with the name ‘C-Shell,’ we thought, ‘that was so cute, we can’t let this go!’"
As the date for the races approach, The C-Shells have been practising.
"It was hilarious and fun," Danyluk said about the first practice on Aug. 19. "People got wet, and we realized for next time to wear different clothes."
Tregobov and Danyluk are also trying to raise money for breast cancer research.
