Caterer relocates to West End
Woman inspired by her grandfather’s need for nutritious, delicious meals
Here’s something to chew on — a West End catering business is now delivering fresh and frozen meals to anywhere in the city from its new location.
Food for Thought, which had been located on Main Street for the past 13 years, moved to its new premises at 840 Erin St. on Sept. 13. The business officially opened on Sept. 18.
Owner Melanie Rushton joked that she had no choice but to move because the previous location was under construction.
"We did look (for a new location) in the North End, but we’re lucky we found this spot in the West End. It’s central for our deliveries and pickups," Rushton said.
Food for Thought prepares food for delivery and pickup — even for people who just walk in on their lunch breaks.
"The walk-in has increased quite a bit. There’s a lot of people coming in that work in the area. There’s more concentration of people here than in the North End," Rushton said.
Rushton started her catering business initially out of a desire to help provide good food to senior citizens in Winnipeg — and it all started with her grandfather. She worried he wasn’t getting the nutrition he needed when cooking became difficult for him, so she got the idea to prepare individual meals for seniors.
Food for Thought is now comprised of 13 people, and most of the staff do the cooking.
"We make everything here, so it’s a lot of prep work," Rushton said.
Rushton, on the other hand, is in charge of recipe development and menu planning. She often tries out recipes at home before launching the dishes at work.
Food for Thought’s meals also aim to be healthy, as much of its clientele consists of senior citizens. Rushton said the meals contain low levels of sodium, sugar, and fat. There are also vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options available for purchase. For a complete menu, visit foodft.ca
Food for Thought is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The store is closed weekends.
The company also delivers on Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
