Christmas is typically a time for joy and cheer — but for those less fortunate, it can be a time of dread.
Westminster United Church (745 Westminster Ave.) recognizes that many families in Winnipeg don’t have the funds necessary to buy extravagant holiday gifts. That’s why the church is holding the Westminster Children’s Christmas Sale on Sat., Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"We’re holding this sale for the people in the community who can’t afford to go to stores and buy gifts. Most of the gifts offered are 25 to 50 cents. Some things are a dollar," Rita Menzies of the Westminster United Church said.
At this sale, children are escorted to the sale room by volunteers to pick out their gifts. Once purchased, they’re taken to another room to get their presents wrapped up. Their parents and guardians wait in the church library with refreshments as the kids shop.
"They emerge with their gifts all wrapped up and find their mom and dad and they’re done. It’s a fun thing. It’s fun for the volunteers and it’s fun for the parents and kids," Menzies said.
While the sale is still a month away, Westminster United Church is asking for gift donations, which include costume jewelry, games, and stuffed toys. Wrapping supplies such as wrapping paper, ribbons, tags, and bags are also needed.
