Competing for the golden apron
Raising money for Wolseley Family Place
Four teams will be cooking up a storm to earn the ultimate prize — the golden apron.
The first-ever Golden Apron Gala is taking place at the Caboto Centre (1055 Wilkes Ave.) on Thurs., May 15 at 7 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for Wolseley Family Place (691 Wolseley Ave.).
Tickets are $100 per person, or $700 for a table of eight people, and they can be purchased at Wolseley Family Place or online at wolseleyfamilyplace.com
Event organizer Pamela Mason said while guests are eating their dinner, they will also be witnessing a culinary competition between four teams of three cooks preparing food in the centre of the room.
"The evening will include primarily the Golden Apron competition. Four teams of competitor cooks will vie for the honour of being awarded the golden apron," Mason said of the prize.
"In the centre of the room, there will be a stage on which the four cooking stations will be set up to face a different direction, so the cooks will have their backs to each other. And behind them, in between the teams, will be a table with all the pantry items."
The competitors will also be able to use the main kitchen of the Caboto Centre.
Mason explained the competition will require the teams to cook with three different secret ingredients — one for the appetizer, one for the entrée, and one for the dessert.
"They’ll also be given a mystery ingredient sometime during the cooking process," Mason said.
Teams will start cooking at 7 p.m. and will work until 9 p.m.
In addition to the dinner and the culinary competition, there will also be chances to win prizes at the silent auction and the reserved good auction as well as live music.
Since the Golden Apron Gala is the first event of its kind being thrown by Wolseley Family Place, Mason said she isn’t sure how much the event is expected to make.
"We are expecting to target funds raised towards food-related programming (at Wolseley Family Place)," Mason said.
Mason said Wolseley Family Place offers a pre-employment program in which women are taught food-related skills and employment skills in preparation for them to enter or re-enter the workforce.
The family centre also has a playroom for children, and funds raised from the Golden Apron Gala will go towards purchasing snacks for children.
