Curling club receives funding boost for accessibility project
A local curling club is receiving some much needed funding to improve accessibility for physically-challenged curlers and guests.
On Dec. 4, the Assiniboia community committee unanimously approved a $50,000 community incentive grant for the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club.
The club will use the money to install a public elevator and unisex, wheelchair accessible washrooms.
The club, which has become popular for wheelchair and stick curling, has found it hard to accommodate physically-challenged members and guests, club vice-president and manager Horst Wuerfel told the committee.
Members are confined to the club’s lower level and cannot access the second level to socialize, watch curling events or attend events and presentations, he said.
"The elevator has been a central component in the long-term planning for the club," Wuerfel said, noting the facility must be more inclusive as it continues to gain new members and attract curlers from across the city.
The total cost of the upgrades is expected to be nearly $170,000. The club has contributed its own funding to the project, and has received an $85,000 Community Infrastructure Improvement grant from the federal government. The club has also applied for funding from the province, which has yet to be approved, Wuerfel said.
Coun. Grant Nordman (St. Charles) said it is important for the city to invest in the sustainability of the club’s future.
"It will be a project worth having in the community," he said.
Established in 1929, the club has 500 members in various men’s, ladies and mixed leagues.
The club is located at 940 Vimy Rd.
