Canstar Community News - ONLINE EDITION
Do your part at community cleanup
At long last, it looks like the seasons are finally changing from winter to spring.
At this time of year, I enjoy reflecting on the boundless opportunities in Assiniboia for those looking to get involved in our community.
A great deal of the activities, programs and services are the result of hard-working volunteers. Volunteers quietly contribute their time to projects they are passionate about, with no need for recognition. Without their efforts, many of the community activities we all enjoy would not be possible.
One annual event I always look forward to hosting is the Assiniboia Community Volunteer Appreciation Night. Each year, West Winnipeg organizations and groups are invited to nominate volunteers from within their group or organization to be recognized for their hard work and commitment to their community.
Those nominees come from a variety of backgrounds, including seniors organizations, exercise groups, sports teams, non-profit groups, community club boards, and service groups. Volunteers in attendance are recognized for their efforts with a special evening that includes a dinner and prizes.
Community cleanups are also a clear signal that spring has arrived. With the snow finally melting, we can see the winter-long accumulation of litter around our roadways and open spaces. This year, there will be two Assiniboia Spring Cleanup dates. The first will take place on Mon., May 5, and the second on Thurs., May 8, both from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.
If you need volunteer hours for school, or are interested in helping out the community, I encourage you to come out. Gloves, bags and other supplies will be provided and afterwards, volunteers will be treated to a complimentary barbecue. Please make sure to dress for the weather, and in the event of rain or storms an alternate date will be planned. Please call my office at 204-888-7722 to register.
I am always happy to chat with you about your questions and concerns. Please feel free to contact my office at the number above or via email at Jim.Rondeau@yourmanitoba.ca. I look forward to seeing you in the community.
