Extended spring chill a nuisance to everyone
In this unseasonably cold spring, do any of the following sound familiar to you?
Around my house, we’ve been toying with the idea of packing away the cold-weather gear, but just can’t bring ourselves to do it when the overnight lows keep reaching double digits.
The garage resembles a small gravel pit and the foyer inside the house needs to be vacuumed every other day to keep things manageable. I’d love to be able to wash my dune buggy — sorry, I mean car — and have it stay clean longer than it takes to come back from the car wash.
Looking at the calendar is no help because I keep trying to convince myself the dates can’t possibly be right. We are inching closer and closer to the month of May, but as I wrote this article on April 22, Environment Canada was predicting this could be the coldest April in the city’s history by a significant margin.
I don’t know about you, but I’m fed up with the spring chill. How messed up is it when I’m itching to spend hours doing household chores like mowing the lawn, to watch a pesky family of rabbits destroy the garden, to empty the shed or even to wash the windows and to stain the deck? None of these are very much fun but right now, in this last gasp of winter, these mindless tasks seem like the best thing ever.
As I recently made my way into work one morning, I saw a gentleman who, for many years now, has been a fixture in Charleswood.
He can often be seen walking up and down Roblin Boulevard or the William Clement Parkway picking up everyone else’s trash. I don’t know him and I don’t know his reasons for doing it, but it is inspiring and he deserves everyone’s thanks for being an almost daily reminder that transforming our neighbourhoods from winter grime to spring shine is a collective effort.
Take heart everyone. Spring is on its way, or so they say!
