Four Metro-area roads voted among ten worst in CAA poll
CAA releases worst roads results, and we... win?
CAA Manitoba released the results of its second annual Worst Roads campaign on Thursday, and roads within The Metro coverage area took four of the top 10 spots in Manitoba.
This year 5,054 online votes were cast for 669 roads during the four-week campaign, a spike in activity from last year when 484 roads generated 3,454 votes.
St. James Street, which took top spot last year with 459 votes, settled for a second place distinction with 480 votes. Other Metro-area ‘winners’ were Berry Street, fourth with 159 votes; Ness Avenue, fifth with 139; and King Edward Street, seventh with 97.
The overall provincial top spot went to Victoria Avenue in Brandon, which pulled in 835 votes.
Liz Peters, public and government affairs manager at CAA, said although on the "surface the campaign seems negative," it’s a positive tool for government to gauge public sentiment and direct their road repair efforts.
"Just because a road is on the top-10 list doesn’t mean it will be fixed, but people are talking about it, it’s out in the media…and the more people say this is a problem then obviously the government, they’ve got to report to someone and that’s Manitobans."
Peters said the province’s April pledge to fix Brandon’s Victoria Avenue is an example of government listening to the public conversation started by CAA’s campaign, which began in March.
Although St. James Street remains on the list since last year (the only street to do so), Peters said money earmarked by the city from the sale of the Canad Inns Stadium site to fix area infrastructure bodes well for the street’s future.
The city has pledged $20 million from the $30.25-million sale will go to area traffic infrastructure.
