Your grandpa walked 20 miles to school, uphill both ways — or so he says. Now it’s time to get out and do a little more walking to school yourself.
October is International Walk to School Month (IWALK), with schools all over the world promoting the benefits of active transportation to their students.
The Green Action Centre is promoting IWALK here at home. In addition to exercise, the Winnipeg non-profit says walking to school has multiple benefits, such as reducing pollution and traffic congestion, decreasing speed around schools, bringing safety to neighbourhoods and giving kids a chance to spend more quality time with one another.
International Walk to School Day is today (Oct. 9). International Walk to School Week started on Oct. 7 and continues until Oct. 11.
