Canstar Community News - ONLINE EDITION
Getting ready for book exchange
As summer progresses and we enjoy our favourite warm-weather activities with friends and family, I continue to stay busy in Assiniboia.
I have enjoyed visiting several neighbourhoods and listening to your thoughts and concerns, hosting many community barbecues and ice cream parties and attending great local events with a bag of freezies in tow to share with neighbourhood kids.
With fall on the horizon, it is time to think about the annual Assiniboia Literacy Book Exchange. I will once again host this great community event on Sat., Sept. 27 outside of my constituency office at 839A Cavalier Dr. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It is staggering to think of how many thousands of books have passed through our office over the past 14 years. Last year, there were hundreds of boxes of books to choose from and we raised well over $1,900 dollars for literacy projects in local schools and daycares. My office continues to collect books for the Literacy Book Exchange, and with your help we will once again have a great selection.
Perhaps your book collection has outgrown your space, or you or a family member is moving. Many people who are devoted attendees say they use the Literacy Book Exchange to get enough books for the year, and after they’re all finished they bring them back as donations for next year! No matter the reason, we are happy to accept books that need a new home at 839A Cavalier Dr. from Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Payment for books and hot dogs are made by donation, and we have a variety of entertainment with something for everyone. Last year we featured performances by John Taylor Collegiate students, the Manitoba Millenium Band, the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen and two great pipers! Come out and enjoy some local music while choosing some new favourite books for your collection.
Literacy is a life skill that is fundamental to achieving success in all aspects of life. I hope you will join me to help celebrate the 14th annual Assiniboia Literacy Book Exchange and BBQ on Sept. 27.
