Girl Guides of Manitoba (GGM) is inviting its young members to sit down and have a chat about global issues.

To recognize the International Day of the Girl — recognized worldwide on Oct. 11 — GGM is inviting Girl Guides between the ages of nine to 11 to participate in a two-hour long workshop called "Because I am a Girl" from 6 to 8 p.m. at Charleswood United Church (4820 Roblin Blvd.) on Oct. 10.

The workshop’s name stems from Plan International’s "Because I am a Girl" movement, which served as a motivating force for GGM.

"(Because I am a Girl) got us going on the idea, and we used some of their promotional videos to educate the girls a little more," said Stephanie Halligan, GGM volunteer and communications representative.

During those two hours, they are expected to talk about issues facing girls around the world, such as child labour and hunger, as well as participate in activities.

Those attending must pay $5 or make a food donation to Winnipeg Harvest. Halligan anticipates 100 to a maximum of 150 girls in attendance at the event.

"I’m just really excited about this day," Halligan said. "Last year, the girls had a blast. They went back to their schools and made presentations. I’m excited to go at it again and have new conversations.

"I think the biggest thing (for these girls) is finding out how we’re all connected. Although we live in Canada, we affect everyone in the world and vice versa, and it’s always amazing seeing the girls realize how people live differently around the world."

According to the International Day of the Girl website, this day is a response to an "urgent problem facing our world today: the neglect and devaluation of girls around the world." The mission is "to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential."
