Exercise physiologist Calla Hamilton said she realized Winnipeg needed more cardiac health programs when she moved back a year ago.
"There’s basically just the cardiac rehab programs out of the Reh-Fit Centre or the Wellness Institute in Garden City," Hamilton said.
That realization led her to join the Assiniboine Medical Clinic, where she helps people retain or regain their health, cardiac and otherwise, under the banner of Creekside Physiotherapy.
She’s been at it since last September, and counts about a dozen regular clients.
"It’s going pretty good. We’ve had referrals directly from the doctors here in the Assiniboine Medical Clinic and we’re trying to get the word out to other family physicians that this program is here for their patients."
And it’s not just for cardiac patients, Hamilton says. Anyone managing chronic disease – be it diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, or obesity – can benefit.
Many patients will see her for a single session which acts as a "stepping stone" to give them the knowledge and practices to carry on by themselves, she said.
"I can also refer, if necessary, if they need more support with smoking cessation or need to be with a dietitian, for example."
