Help out with creek cleanup
Now that this longest of winters seems (hopefully) to be drawing to a close, we’re ready to get out there and start enjoying warm spring days in the community!
Fortunately for us, here in St. James we have some great options that make it easy to get active and get out there to enjoy the spring.
It’s a pleasant stroll over to Assiniboine Park with a stop at Sargent Sundae along the way (a favourite of my little ones). And, if you haven’t yet, take in the recently expanded Yellow Ribbon Greenway Trail, starting off in Legion Memorial Park on Silver Avenue. It’s peaceful, scenic, and both pedestrian and bike friendly.
If you are open to a little community investment while appreciating the outdoors, I’d be thrilled to see some folks come out to help at the Annual Creek Cleanup this weekend.
I host this event in partnership with MLA’s Sharon Blady (Kirkfield Park) and Rob Altemeyer (Wolseley). We’ll be cleaning up three locations on Saturday, May 11 at noon: Truro Creek (at Bruce Park), Omand’s Creek (at the Home Depot parking lot), and Sturgeon Creek (at Woodhaven Community Club).
Plus, we’ll make sure you are fed! There will be a barbecue and chances to win prizes at all three locations. Through a generous donation by the Silver Heights Food Fare, we will have hot dogs and drinks at the Bruce Park location.
If you are able to dedicate even an hour to help us pick up a winter’s worth of trash that has collected around the creek and green space, I know that it would make a big difference. I will thank you! The creeks will thank you! And so will those who frequently use these spaces throughout the warm weather months ahead.
In the coming days there will be other opportunities to get out and involved with the community.
If you are itching to get back to gardening, Deer Lodge Community Centre is having a Community Yard and Plant Sale on May 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. And if you’re an animal lover, Craig Street Cats is holding their Walk for Wags and Whiskers fundraiser on Sunday, June 2 at R.A. Steen Community Centre, registration starts at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10.
However you choose to spend the coming spring days, I hope you feel as invigorated and renewed as spring itself, and that you are able to devote a little bit of time to the great community we live in.
