Winnipeg artist Elena El’s acrylic on canvas scenes of our city will be on display during her show Hey Winnipeg! at the Cre8ery Gallery and Studio April 25 to May 7.
"She has created an exhibition with strong Winnipeg scenes, and I believe Winnipeg people will enjoy seeing her paintings. They’re sort of playful and fun," said Cre8ery director Jordan Miller.
El, a resident artist at the gallery, moved to Winnipeg from Israel with her husband six years ago, drawn by the Jewish community and friends. Besides the gallery she also operates a studio out of her Crestview home.
She says Winnipeg is "not too big to get lost, it’s not so small to get bored. It’s just perfect."
Her paintings of the city are realistic, she says, but not photographic in nature.
"I just try to show the way I see the city… people say, ‘oh, Winnipeg there’s nothing great about it,’ I don’t agree. I think it’s a beautiful city. I try to paint it and show it."
Her prints start around $40 and large originals run as high as $700, though $400 is average, she said.
The April 25 exhibition opening runs from 6 to 9 p.m., consisting of a reception with refreshments where people can meet El. After that, the show starts at noon every day.
The gallery website— www.cre8ery.com — has a full listing of exhibit hours and samples of El’s work.
Admission is free.
