Now that summer is finally upon us, it’s time to spend time outside in some of our great local parks and public spaces.
I had an amazing time this June at École Bannatyne’s Team Depot Day, when volunteers came out to help with the school’s natural playground project. Once completed, the playground will include a wiggle wall, a perennial garden, big sitting boulders and more trees. It will be a fabulous asset for our community.
Speaking of our schools, I also had a great time going out to graduations and awards ceremonies. Whether graduating from kindergarten or Grade 12, our students have worked hard this year and have much to be proud of.
While at these events, I was pleased to present several MLA Peacekeeper Awards. These awards are given in co-operation with schools and the school division to students who show a commitment to peacekeeping through non-violent conflict resolution, co-operation and the principles of fair play in the classroom and at school.
In a world where violence is increasingly glorified, it is wonderful to see young people who actively work to promote peace in their school community.
Congratulations to this year’s recipients: Jessica B. from Westwood Collegiate, Bryce M. from Athlone School, Jaden L. and Michaela H. from Winnipeg Mennonite Elementary & Middle School, Oliver P. and Desiray L. from École Bannatyne, Madison B. from St. Charles Catholic School, Tarik Z. and Marissa Mc. from Bruce Middle School, Chase H. from Lincoln Middle School and a wonderful group of students from École Robert Browning and Sansome School.
If you are looking for things to do now that school is out, check out the new splash pad that has opened at St. James-Assiniboia Centennial Pool through the Building Communities Initiative II (BCI) partnership between the City and the Province. This new piece of neighbourhood infrastructure will provide lots of opportunities for families to enjoy some sunshine.
I will also be hosting a couple of community barbecues this summer, so please watch out for more information in your neighbourhood.
I hope to be out in the community as much as possible this summer to talk with you, answer any questions you may have and hear any ideas you have to share. As well, you can feel free to come by my office for a chat, or to give us a call at 204-832-2318.
We would love to hear about any upcoming events! I hope everyone has the chance to stay active and have a relaxing summer.
