Housing expo for seniors Oct. 19
People of all ages can agree that there’s no place like home, but for many senior citizens, this especially rings true.
Sturgeon Creek United Church (207 Thompson Dr.) is holding a housing expo for seniors on Oct. 19 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Taking place in the "rainbow room" of the church, the event is expected to provide seniors with resources related to housing. Topics of discussion will be geared towards helping seniors make a decision, if they find themselves facing a choice between remaining in their home or looking for other options.
"So many older people are wondering where they will be five years from now, and often don’t know where to begin to plan," Cheryl Cels, one of the organizers of the expo, wrote in an email.
Possible reasons for seniors having to move from their homes include physical and/or mobility issues and loneliness. Cels recognizes many seniors have cognitive issues, but said that’s an entirely different issue. She wants people to know the event is targeted towards independent seniors who need a little more assistance and are "less able to keep a house going."
Cels said there will be four speakers present at the church.
Angela Gentile, a senior social worker with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA), is the keynote speaker.
"She will be talking about pretty much, ‘Do I stay or do I go?’ which is the quandary that seniors are in, trying to decide what they should do," Cels said. "They’re really just wondering what the supports are if they stay where they are. Angela will be able to help people with their decision-making."
Other speakers at the expo include Vicki Russenholt, of not-for-profit organization Victoria Lifeline, Silvia Visintin representing Age & Opportunity, and Lauren Cooke of Leapfrog Moving Company.
