Learn how to ride, fix bikes at inaugural bike bazaar
125 bikes on tap for swapping
People are invited to buy/sell/swap their bikes and also learn about repairing and riding them at an inaugural Community Bike Bazaar.
The bazaar will take place May 25 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Orioles Bike Cage, 444 Burnell Street.
Parents whose kids are outgrowing their bikes can do a straight swap for one of the bikes being brought to the bazaar by organizers.
"We have 125 bikes for kids between the ages of two to eight," said Pat Krawec, executive director of The Wrench, a non-profit community bike shop.
Other non-profit and volunteer-run bike shops partnered in the bazaar include The Bike Dump and the University of Winnipeg Bike Lab, Krawec said.
"It’s a good way to get to know each other, get some tips, make connections — maybe somebody would like to volunteer at a community bike shop," he said of the "block party-style" event.
Lessons will be given on teaching children how to ride and maintaining a bike’s chain and brakes.
A workshop from 12:30 to 1 p.m. will show how to turn a small child’s bicycle into a strider, which Krawec described as a pedal-less bike with a locked steering column.
He said a strider allows a child to safely learn how to balance on a bike at their own pace — allowing them roll along using foot power. Once their skills improve, the steering column is unlocked.
Too often parents use training wheels, which is "a very, very bad way of teaching a kid how to ride," he said, and after they take the training wheels off for the first time they often run along beside their child, creating stress and fear of an impending crash.
The bazaar will include entertainment and food. Donations of ready-to-eat food will be appreciated, Krawec said.
