Line of cards designed by inspiration
Woman makes experiences of others into art
Heather Klassen takes inspiration from everyday life and turns it into a greeting card for her business, designed by inspiration.
The 30-year-old Charleswood resident started her online company in June 2007 out of a desire to share experiences and wisdom from herself and the people around her.
"I write my own inspirational sayings," Klassen said.
Klassen used to work at a homeless shelter where she said she met many inspirational individuals who taught her a lot about life.
"Meeting people who are less fortunate and talking to them, it really opened my eyes to what’s out there," Klassen said.
Klassen left that job a couple of years ago and is now looking to expand her greeting card business, including starting to set up at farmers markets.
Klassen moved away from Winnipeg for over a year, and had to take a break from her craft. But now she’s back in town and back at it.
One of the challenges Klassen faces is appealing to her audience, because her inspirational cards may not exactly speak to everyone.
"My challenge is finding people that need that inspiration," Klassen said. "(My cards) are not something that everyone is going to pick up and love (right away)."
Klassen’s cards are mainly text-based with a photograph, and she takes those pictures herself. She grew up in the small town of Minnedosa, where she was always out in the field with a camera.
"A lot of my photos are nature-themed," Klassen said.
Klassen sells her cards for five dollars each, or a package of five cards for $20. Online she sells the cards at six dollars each, including shipping costs.
Klassen said her cards aren’t really for birthdays or Christmas. They’re not for holidays in general.
"(They’re) for a personal connection," Klassen explained.
