Artsfest rich with culture
The University of Winnipeg is throwing its first ever UWinnipeg Artsfest from Sept. 27 to Oct. 5.
The festival will feature art displays, books, artifacts, and letters, as well as entertainment from Theatre Projects Manitoba, Virtuosi Concerts, and The Downtown Jazz Band.
To start things off, there will be a wine and cheese art auction and live cabaret performance on Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m.

Local businesses up for MBiz Awards
Many Manitoban businesses were recently named as finalists for the 2013 MBiz Awards, including Manitoba Blue Cross (599 Empress St.) and EPIC Information Solutions (167 Sherbrook St.).
Manitoba Blue Cross was one of three finalists in the ‘Long Term Achievement Business — Winnipeg’ category.
EPIC Information Solutions was one of three finalists in the ‘Outstanding Medium Business’ category.
The MBiz Awards, organized by the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, take place at the Fairmont Hotel (2 Lombard Pl.) on Oct. 17.
St. James-Assiniboia school board elects chairs
The St. James-Assiniboia School Division’s Board of Trustees elected new chairs during its annual general meeting Sept. 10.
Craig McGregor (Silver Heights/Booth Ward) has been elected chair of the Board of Trustees, and Cheryl Smukowich (Kirkfield/ St. Charles Ward) was elected vice-chair. Sandy Lethbridge (Kirkfield/St. Charles) was elected chair of the education committee, Scott Johnston (King Edward/Deer Lodge Ward) was elected chair of the finance/facilities committee, and Jennifer Lawson (King Edward/Deer Lodge) was elected chair of the personnel committee.
Board meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the school board office at 2574 Portage Ave.
Legion to honour heroes with chili cook-off
St. James Legion #4 is thanking firefighters and paramedics for their services by throwing them a celebration.
The "Our Everyday Hero’s Celebration" is taking place on Sept. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the branch (1755 Portage Ave.).
There will be a chili cook-off between the branch members and the firefighters. There will also be live entertainment and a silent auction. A meal of chili and a beer will cost $5. All proceeds go to the Firefighters Burn Fund.
WAG lends auditorium to U of W
Several University of Winnipeg students will have classes at the Winnipeg Art Gallery during the fall and winter terms of the 2013/2014 school year.
This partnership between the university and art gallery is expected to reduce waiting lists by providing another space for classes to take place.
About 400 students will attend classes in the Muriel Richardson Auditorium at the WAG.
