MRFD to be 'awesome sight' on Portage Ave.
Manitoba Ride for Dad looking to beat last year's record for riders
A massive motorcycle parade is on its way.
The fifth annual Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad (MRFD) is on track to beat last year’s record of 837 riders for their Sat., May 25 ride to raise funds in the fight against prostate cancer.
"As it sits right now we’re probably somewhere around 400 registered riders at the moment," said MRFD spokesperson Ed Johner on May 15, adding that’s about 200 more than were registered by that time last year.
Many riders join in the last days, Johner said. Last year, about 300 riders registered on the Saturday of the ride.
"We’re hopeful that we can do 1,000 riders this year."
The result will be awe-inspiring, he said, as riders depart from Polo Park Shopping Centre at 10 a.m. with a police escort down Portage Avenue to the western edge of the city.
"I mean, last year, just over 800 motorcycles cruising down Portage Avenue at a parade pace . . . not only an awesome sight to see, but something to hear as well."
From there, riders can choose to continue on a circuit that will hit Selkirk and Gimli before returning.
Pledges toward the ride’s fundraising goal this year of $130,000 are also going well, Johner said. If the goal is reached it would bring the five-year total raised by the event to $500,000.
