Cold Winnipeg winters might make a person crave a hot bowl of soup, and a not-for-profit organization is giving people across the city that opportunity.

And they’ll deliver it right to your door in an environmentally-friendly way.

Soup Bee, a program supported by the West Broadway Development Organization, launched its soup delivery program earlier this month. The program gives people experience working in a kitchen that they can use on their resume. The soups are delivered weekly by bike courier and help cut down on gas emissions.

"Everyone, when they’re at work, they want to have a healthy lunch that is affordable," said Kelly Frazer, Soup Bee’s marketing manager.

"This offers people an opportunity to do that. To have something that’s good, hot, delicious and healthy, and they’re also helping the community and being delivered in an environmentally friendly fashion."

Two types of soup are available to subscribers: a vegetarian/vegan/gluten free soup and a meat soup.

Soups come in one-litre containers and cost $8.99 and $9.99, respectively, which includes delivery.

"If you look at that as the price of having two or three lunches that are pretty delicious, I think that’s pretty…unbeatable value-wise," Frazer said.

Soup Bee delivers to downtown addresses every Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m to 1 p.m., including locations in the West End, Wolseley, Osborne Village and Exchange District.

It also has two designated pick-up spots for people who want to bring their soups to the suburbs.

Frazer believes the soups are an excellent and convenient way for people who live or work downtown to stay healthy and avoid consuming fast food.

"You’re looking at real vegetables, well raised meats, there’s just no comparison to any of the convenience foods that you get," she said.

"They’re definitely not going to be as healthy and they don’t help out your local community."
Robyn Webb has been a soup subscriber almost since the start of the program. The soups have made lunch much easier for her.

"The neatest thing is just having lunch come straight to my office and not having the fuss," she said.

"It’s great especially in the winter time, not even having to put on your winter coat on, it comes straight to you."

Webb’s favourite soups can vary because she’s always finding new tastes she enjoys.

"I have a new favourite," she said. "The peanut yam they just recently made was exceptional.

It had a nice twist because it had some spinach added to it."

The holiday season can usually be a busy time and Soup Bee offers gift certificates for three litres of soup and soup subscription gift certificates.
