Numerous projects underway in St. James
It’s hard to believe summer has come to an end.
With fall comes the promise of routine, schedules and in the case of St. James, many construction projects being completed to make our community even better. I’m excited to be able share a few of those with you.
Sturgeon Heights Community Club Complex Upgrades
Construction crews are busy at the Sturgeon Heights Community Club, building two new outdoor rinks for hockey this winter. Expansion of the current splash pad is set to start this fall with a new play structure to follow shortly after. This will add a great outlet for the kids and families in the area. There will be close to a million dollars in upgrades and new equipment happening on this site this fall alone.
New Police Station for St James/Charleswood
The finishing touches are being completed on the new area police district station, located at 2321 Grant Ave. This single-storey, 33,000-square-foot station will provide a modern, state-of-the-art facility for police operations, ensuring police have the tools they need to help service local residents.
This new facility replaces outdated stations on Lyle Street and Pembina Highway. The region will also see more officers helping to protect and make our community safer. Construction of the new District Police Station is expected to be completed in late fall.
New Fire Station Set to Open in Fall
A new $4-million, 12,000-square-foot fire station that services east St. James is set to be completed in late fall. This station is designated as a state-of-the-art "core area" station, meaning it will serve downtown as well as St. James and River Heights. The new fire station will also handle hazardous materials and technical rescue that is anticipated from Centreport and airport area expansion.
Polo Park Upgrades
Over the next two seasons, the city will invest $40 million into the Polo Park-St. James Street area on infrastructure and street repair. City departments have almost completed a plan for these upgrades. A community consultation meeting with residents and local business will be held later this fall. Stay tuned for information on a time and date for the consultation meeting.
I look forward to hearing your feedback on the above projects and upgrades we are making. There are always ways to improve, and I will continue to work at making St. James the best area in the city.
