Promote literacy by donating books to barbecue
It’s hard to believe how fast time passes and that we are already nearing the end of summer. It seems like yesterday that school summer vacation was just beginning.
With all of the new and improved healthy living options in Assiniboia, there are certainly many choices to keep kids and adults busy on these hot summer days. A great activity in summer, and in fact all year round, is reading. Reading is a great way to spend time and get lost in a great story while helping maintain and grow the literacy skills learned during the school year.
As the summer nears its end, our thoughts begin to move toward the start of the next school year. In the fall, the province will continue our initiative of reducing class sizes for Grades K-3 to help ensure that our children learn the core skills needed to build a solid foundation for their future academic success.
There are also great local opportunities for adult learners who are interested in pursuing and improving their literacy skills and continuing their education. Stevenson-Britannia Adult Literacy Program, Inc., located at 1 Braintree Cres. on the lower level of Jameswood School, operates an Adult Learning Centre and Adult Literacy Program with funding from the Department of Advanced Education and Literacy. Through the programs, students can learn in a respectful environment and celebrate their successes.
In co-operation with local organizations like Stevenson-Britannia, I will once again host the 13th Annual Literacy Book Exchange and BBQ in front of my constituency office on Sat., Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a great event that welcomes everyone to attend, have a hot dog and a drink and take the time to sort through the extensive collection of books to find some new reading material. We will be accepting donations for the books and barbecue and the proceeds go to local schools and literacy projects.
My office has already begun collecting books and with your help we will have a great selection to choose from. Donations of school supplies are also welcome and will be distributed to local schools for students in need.
If you are reducing the size of your book collection, please feel free to drop off books to my office at 839A Cavalier Dr., from Monday to Friday. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Entertainment at the Literacy Book Exchange and BBQ will be provided by local schools and community members. It’s always great to showcase the talent and community spirit in Assiniboia. I look forward to seeing you there!
